One such story unfolded in Japan, where an elderly man named Mr. Kuroki dedicated several years to planting thousands of beautiful pink flowers around his home. His motivation was to cheer up his wife and lift her spirits after she lost her sight and fell into a deep depression. His heartfelt gesture aimed to bring joy to her life, allowing her to experience beauty through fragrance, even if she could no longer see it with her eyes.
The story began after Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki moved to a dairy farm in rural Japan shortly after their marriage in 1956. They spent 30 years caring for a herd of 60 cows, enjoying a stable and happy life. However, their lives took a turn for the worse when Mrs. Kuroki developed diabetes, which led to complications causing her blindness at the age of 52. This development plunged her into a state of depression and isolation, withdrawing from interactions with others. Mr. Kuroki, deeply saddened by this change, had hoped to travel with her after their retirement and sought a way to lift her spirits and bring her back into the sunshine she once loved.
One day, Mr. Kuroki noticed a vibrant pink flower with a strong scent growing on the farm. Many visitors had expressed their admiration for it, which sparked an idea in his mind. He decided to plant thousands of these flowers around his farm to attract visitors, hoping it would draw his wife out of her isolation and back into the sunlight she adored. Over the next two years, he transformed the dairy farm into a massive flower garden. Although he knew his wife couldn’t enjoy the visual beauty, he was certain she could delight in the fragrance. The garden became stunningly beautiful, attracting large numbers of tourists who came from near and far to experience the floral display and its enchanting aroma.
Mr. Kuroki’s idea succeeded in coaxing his wife back into the sunlight to enjoy the scent of their lush garden and interact with its new visitors. Her cheerful spirit returned, and the flowers continue to bloom in the garden to this day, flourishing twice a year and drawing 7,000 visitors daily, especially in March and April. Even now, the couple, who are in their seventies and eighties, still cherish their daily walks through their fields of pink blossoms.
